Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is located near the historic town of Srirangapatna in the Mandya district of Karnataka state. The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for wildlife lovers.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a very small sanctuary, being only 0.67 sq km in area, and comprises six islets on the banks of the river Kaveri.

Ranganathittu attained the status of a bird sanctuary in 1940. The ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali noted that the islands are an important nesting ground for birds, and persuaded the Wodeyar kings of Mysore to declare the region a wildlife sanctuary.

The most common birds in the sanctuary are painted storks, spoon bills, white ibises, egrets, herons and partridges. Most of the birds stay on tiny islands within the river, which you can approach by boat.
